I am really starting to hate M$ and Apple (i say starting with M$ it has been a long and healthy hate). Why can big companies like this not produce good bits of COMPATIBLE software. I mean Apple has to encrypt all my music so I have to use iTunes...why! At least have the curtesty to make a linux version as well. and as for M$ ive lost count of the number of problems ive found with their PROFESSIONAL software. why is is so %&£)*£ resource hungry. really i mean my linux box which must be about 6 years old can do just as much as my main box (except for graphics which is down to an ANCIENT GPU rather then beautiful beautiful linux) so ehay can M$ PAID programmers write as gooder quality code. There getting beaten by a dev team that consists largly of HOBBISTS (not to desparage the quality of the linux dev team but for the most part they do it in their spare time and yes i know that there are some paid devers but not as many as in the M$ team). also why is M$ so unconfigurable, if i install a linux system i can control everything (esp if i use this distro http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/ and yes i do have a box that runs LFS) i just dont get why companies cannot play nicely and make good software

mabe im being hard on M$ as a company (after all the games dept has produced some brilliant games AoE MSFS etc) but the OS dept is just shoddy ive taken to only hibernating by main box as it takes AGES to get wincr*p to boot Evil or Very Mad and the shear number of mem leaks in that os is phenomenal it really seams to eat mem at times.

and why are mac users so elitist. i mean they seam to think that macs are the solution to all problems and are so up each others asses (i can say that in here right...) that they don't every see the light of day. and from a companies view macs are a nightmare. for example one it admin i know told me that they had buy a new mac in, find they had a new employee, but not only could they not get the same hardware but they couldn't even get the same OS version and to top it all off the custom font that works on every other mac in the dept wont work on this new one. this has been causing no end of problems and could be solved by a simple fix from apples end but no they think they know best and force everyone to be a clone (mabey thats whay mac users are so alike and elitist they are all CLONES)

and on the subject things thinking they know best what is up with all of M$ office and its insitance that it has to change everything you do. its like its thinking (and yes i realise that software isn't quite to the thinking stage yet) just what to do to make life as difficult as possible for the end user and going one worse. why cant they just make software that does what you tell it to do without trying to be clever about it, everyone else manages to so why cant they

and the crowning glory of M$ annoyance: updates. they seem never ending and they never seem to want to install for me so i always have the annoying Exclamation in my task bar thing. and another thing why when i uninstall a piece of software on wincr*p does it not uninstall properly instead it just clogs up my registry (and what is up with having a registry anyhow) and my HD.

ive just looked back at this and i think that i should stop now... Embarassed

what a BOOK anyway rant over (for now at least...)

I feel your pain - M$ is so busy making there software incompatible that it screws everyone else not using.. They take years old protocols and rename them something dumb and twist up the code with some wrapper to make them almost unusable and sell it as an upgrade?? ( OFFICE ) Now they are trying to kill open source with patent crap because they feel threatened and they just want it to go away so people don't wise up to just how must they are being raped for crappy software that doesn't even work as advertised.. Mac that is an entirely different situation "it is a ( complete ) system" pretty much for average users or professionals if you don't have a good understanding of it you are just better off using it as Apple says and it will work and do the job, but you have to conform to the apple way of thinking. It's not for everyone, but it beats the crap out of anything M$ thats for sure because if you follow the directions it will work.. Long live Linux, It can inter operate with all other O/S's out there just fine. It's the Swiss Army knife and ohh yeah, for the most part it's FREE, Thanks to the 1000's of people that devote there spare time to developing it! I have to give up a couple things like Active-X controls, Direct-X .ASP wysiwyg editors, Games not built w/ OpenGL standard and the newest version of Photoshop, see where I am going with this? Rolling Eyes. But I have available some of the most powerful software tools in computing freely available in there more pure form and I don't have to order CD's and put in activation codes, deal with demo's etc..

M$ is garbage they have nearly ruined computing in the past and probably won't be happy till they have.. We all know this!

Apple was nearly chocked to death by M$ and they are not going to make mistake again I am pretty sure. At least they are taking a stand "now" against DRM, I just hope it is not to little to late..

Linux is making some ground but by nature it is going to be quickly squashed ( hopefully not ) again by the might Microsuck if people don't quite so freely giving them money to do so by buying inferior M$ products. And then actually understand what has been going on for the last 20 years when they start complaining about there computers viruses and crashing!!!

just one more point i feel a duty as a programmer to make...

what is up with M$s programming languages. for every good language out there basic, c etc (and possible even java, although without multiplatform support) M$ come up with a cr*p alternative that tries to be clever and hide code from the users. Take VB for an example, it does works and can produce great results (as my friend has shown - VB games) but dear god what an awful language to work with, how much code do they hide and why make it a crippled form of some kind of event driven language sort of...

why does M$ have to try to make a better versin of everything. i say they try and make a better version in reality their trying to tie more people to M$ because they know its cr*p and their trying to keep as many users and devers as possible by making it as difficult as possible to leave. As I write i am beginning to effect an escape from both Apple and M$ by converting all my music from AAC (ugh) to MP3 (Very Happy) soon i can leave both behind i cant wait

You and PT always see both ...all three OS'es from a single view point though. You also look at M$ and Apple like each is owned by a single person, Gates and Jobs, and that they are trying to make YOUR life harder.

Try and get your mind around the massive number of PC's (and the people using them) that run windows. It is in the billions. Those people not only speak a few hundred different languages, but they think differently as well. Each of those countries has their own laws, expectations, etc.

Add to the fact that there are malicious people out there doing their best to undermine security at EVERY turn.

The reality is simple. M$ and Apple are owned by baby boomer, little old ladies and everyone in between. They are companies doing business, they have share holder, an a responsibility to those share holders to make a profit and a return on that investment. They happen to be competing in what has to be the MOST cutthroat, volatile market on planet earth.

If M$ makes it's OS completely open, their IP looses value exponentially, they open themselves up to an even greater security risk, and they loose the level of computability (which is actually VERY high) they now have. That introduces a level of complexity that 99.9 percent of those billions of users could not handle.

Apple designs its software and markets it the way it does because it is the only way it can survive. PERIOD. Apple is easier to use because they lock their OS AND hardware down even tighter than M$ does, and because they do less. M$ has one group howling that it's OS is to closed, and the other howling that it is unsecured...ultimately they can't win, can never make all of you happy.

I am older then both of you, and I remember when Russia was the USSR. I can't help but look at Linux with the same thoughts communism evokes.

Lastly, on July 20th 1969 we made history. The computer I am using to write this likely has 100 times the computing power of the billion dollar computers on the Apollo lunar lander that traveled to the moon. Think how much games alone have advanced in just le last 5 or so years...are any of the OS'es perfect? Of course not. But they are always trying to improve and adapt to the changing needs of the people that use them.

McDonald's sells billions of hamburgers but that doesn't mean they are any good?

And communism? WOW.. You have been watching to many Ballmer speeches I think Shocked

All I have left to say is until Linux is pried out of my hands, I would not wipe my a$$ with a M$ product.. I don't know how stocks give a company the right to run over other technologies and make computing suck for the masses in order to keep there stock value high. I mean that is one way to look at it, but that way of thinking is the fundamental underlying problem of why software sucks so much and why it is going to suck until M$ is reduced to rubble. The Windoze registry is a rolling target of suck, there is just no why possible to secure it and it will be the there ultimate downfall in the end.. It would cause sales to fall if they did! How many people buy 2 or 3 ( LICENSES ) for the same computer because it caught a virus??

Crippled Software - Interoperability - Anti Virus predator companies.. You should deal w/ the users face to face for a while - Trust me! It Sucks for the masses.. They are walking wallets waiting to get raped, And that is just the way M$ wants it!! ( or has made it )

Google Microsoft Sucks

You say this but this is not really true. For example you can't get more open that linux and yet it is a very secure platform. This is for two reasons:

1. The software is well written to avoid security risks (i know that sounds arogant but there are a hugh number of security additions for linux, a linux box revolves around security and linux had firewalls in every box back since who knows when)

2. The number of people who can see the code it hugh and so it is more likely a "good guy" will see a flaw quicker than with a dev team the size of M$ and with any company the entire dev team won't spend its time looking for flaws neither will the comunity. So whilst it is easier for "bad guys" to spot flaws easier in linux its also easier for the good guys to spot them and fix them.

ive just thought of this so i thought id add it

linux was multiuser from the beginging (true multi user, ie you can have two or more people using it at the same time) and so security between users is a fundemental part of the os and this makes overall security much higher (esp with Role Based Access Control) as those same protections are used when letting people login etc.

Win32 was designed as a single user system, while this is no bad thing it means that having any protection between users is not fundementally built into the kernel. This means it is much easier to gain control of the entire system if you get one user account.

How many people have admin accounts on win32 that they use for everyday use. That does not happen on linux nobody (at least nobody should do this) uses root as an everyday user. To gain root access you need to get a pass that is hardly ever used and that is a much harder prospect.

whilst designing a single user system is no bad thing it means that security is less fundemental to the kernel

when i say single user sys i mean 1 person sitting at the terminal at a time on linux you can have multiple terminals connected to on pc at the same time.

not very clear i know but its hard to explain (PT can you do any better?)

EDIT: found this wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiuser mabey this will get past my dyslexic fumblings

M$ is a insecure POS - Here is a graph showing just how obvious it can be..

Link to article and it is a good graph

I don't shop at W@lMart and Co$tco because they support selling Garbage, I would NEVER buy a D3LL or Pay money for M$. Just because of principal. If everyone stopped then these companies would not be able screw the life out of the public any longer ( they'd be broke ).. Wise up "Consumers" your being F%^$ed!! It's all based on stocks. I have had people check there D3ll stocks while I was bad mouthing there computers in front of them, what do you think they bought?? w/ M$ as a given because how else can you get it, Ewwwwbuttu. I think not.. No one has any morals anymore they are perfectly happy with lowest common denominator because they don't have to know anything or want to! They just get out there credit card and show up to work the next day so the bill gets paid! "The American Way"

I don't know enough on the entire subject to be an "expert". I do know that at 40 I am still too young to HATE so easily =)

As I understand it though, Linux is free...yet a microscopic number of users use it...and it is FREE! Every time anyone points out any area of linux that is less then perfect you guys pounce and wave your arms about how it's not a big deal (like poor driver support, the confusion 50 different distros cause, complexity etc) but that any issues with Window, no matter how small, are the end of the world.

If the majority of users used Linux or Mac there would be JUST as many viruses and security issues cause the people doing that sort of stuff would shift their focus.

I have no love for windows (nor the "hate" for it). Nothing is perfect, and if Linux becomes the top dog, it will then suck and people will rank on it.

I know what you mean but driver support etc would also come with more people using it.

The main reason I don't jump on linux's faults and really jump on M$'s faults is that M$ are paid to do it linux is done for the fun of it and so you cant expect it to be perfect.

and while there would be an increase in viruses i dont think there would be an increase in security issues because of the way linux is written and checked, it has massive peer review so any security issues get ironed out quickly. Linux is already used for a lot of web and mail servers (and if EYM's siggy is to be belived box gods runs on linux) and so it already has a lot of testing from a security point of view.

The point is linux has security through every layer of the OS and always has with M$ the security just isn't that fundemental, and as for poor design M$ could keep me going for several days discussing their design flaws and whilst linux isn't perfect in that respect they haven't made as bad a mistakes

Missing Drivers? Your kidding right Shocked

Linux supports "just" about every piece hardware on the planet out of the box w/o loading drivers.. ( There are several I have load - yes )
I use cab extract to load a windoze driver for my PVR500's ( supported ) ivTv Drver
Epson provides a driver for there scanners I use ( no problems )
Sony and Nikon cameras no problem..
Bluetooth - Zero config.
Cell phone ect.. ect..

Network / wireless cards are the only real issue that I can see?
And that is to be faulted on the companies who insist on locking up there drivers for what ever reason and loading them as firmware not releasing the code. I don't really get that one because they make hardware wouldn't they want to sell more by making it easy for people to use..

EDIT: Ohh yeah I forgot Nvidia and ATI both actively support 3D drivers for Linux..
Linux can be attacked from a security point of view - Yes.
But is absolutely not possible for it to be attacked to the point that it just useless ( Allow or Deny ) like windoze is now! It comes back to garbage in garbage out - Look at that graph I posted it can't get much more straight forward than that, that is just web servers to. It would get much uglier if the whole system was analyzed like that..

The biggest problem Linux faces is M$, If these A$$hat companies would stop sighing there agreements to only support M$ that would help everyone involved and we would not be having a conversation like this...

Thats a lot less flamatory response and well reasoned. As I said, I don't have enough know how with any of them to be an expert, but I do feel that Linux users tend to berate Windows USERS more then they do the OS itself, and I think that just won't ever accomplish anything. Windows users do the same to Mac USERS (not that those mac idiots don't bring it on themselves Wink

Don't hate the Palyas, hate on the game =)

Hey G whats your digits so I forward one of three M$ user infected phone lines so you can answer some of our M$ nightmares for 72hrs and see if you can resist wanting to reach through the phone line and smacking the crap out of these people...

Your wife might have to check you into rehab due to unusual high amount of alcohol consumption.

If you had a liqueur shop in our town we'd probably be one of your most frequent customers...

Ohh That sounds nice I wish I had it easy like that - They don't complain about there broken 360's. I have heard that one about enough lately. Those must last 366 days and they they just implode.. We have a little theory about how M$ sold so many besides it came out a year ahead. It's because everyone has boughten two of the POS's by now because they keep breaking and there not that serviceable.. Laughing

I suspect every time Bill gates that little pain in his nut sack it is really cause PT is poking pins into the crotch of a voodoo doll.

Here is an oldie from way back to make PT's day...nothing like reminding a geek of his place in the food chain of popular people =)

Notice the Apple back there, He must have just finished lifting most of the "working" code from it and rewriting it to backward M$ code ( pure genius - Bill )

I just ran across a funny idea the other day of how plain it is that M$ does everything backward..

Dos = \ uses backslash and it's just inconvenient.. ( look where it is when you type? )

Unix - Linux - FreeBSD - Apple - Sun everyone ELSE uses / forward slash.. The right way!

It just got worse from there, but that is M$ ingenuity at it's finest.
Do everything backwards but tell the public everybody else is doing it wrong!

The only original Idea I can come up with that they have had is to patent and sell massive amounts of software to consumers. Even that was not entirely theres because ATT just didn't have the foresight to sell UNIX it to the masses back in the day..

PT use to be easy going and really didn't mind any platform to much. But that changed over a year or two of M$ user abuse and viruses ridding. It's taken it's toll for sure after 6 six years & M$ always making it harder to clean their mess up,you'd be in the same boat.

PT just realized that he only meets the cool linux users.I on the other hand get to meet all the smelly 40 year old VIRGINS!!! They talk with their chest puffed out and try to impress me with their love for the thesaurus readings. They tell me how they buy all this hardware and that their place is hopping with the latest stuff.

I just deflate their poor egos when i tell them about just some of my electronic toys. How I use Linux too, and how we have everything streamlined between our ƒ home and work.

I realize that dealing with customers with windows problems all day must surly taint your view. That said, the people who are not having problems obviously have no need to come see you...much like Doctors only to see "sick" patients.

Also, for the record, though I am not familiar with Mac's or Linux, and you seem to think I just sit around all day reviewing hardware and modding, I do look after several large medical practices and a few insurance offices. I build and maintain their servers and workstations. One doctors offices uses Shuttle's for about 10 work stations, runs a LOT of very odd, purpose built record keeping, billing and prescribing software. There is also a lab with a few million worth of diagnostic equipment, also run on windows machines.

The other practice has 8 machines I built, and a server, plus it's own lab. Not to put too fine a point on the need for stable secure machines, but they have to network with half a dozen different insurance billing system, like Blue Cross etc and each probably bill a million dollars a month.

The insurance office has several locations, each with 4-6 machines and a server, all Dell's (Farmers gets a group deal with Dell) and also networks with corporate.

I go out once a month and blow the dirt out of them, check for any updates. Every 3 years we replace them whether they need it or not. I have never had any issues...everything just works.

I also set up and "keep an eye" on a local emergency preparedness office (run on grants from the Department of Homeland Security cash cow) that has quite a few machines in 2 locations that are networked with a central server that is connected to every hospital and clinic in the valley to monitor hospital bed numbers, equipment and aircraft/vehicle totals etc. It is also connected to the Border Patrol and the national guard 24/7/365. Also all Dell windows PC's, also no problems.

I also consulted for a school district that was making the transition from Mac's to PC's. There was some resistance from the staff, and I suspect the fact that Dell (the contractor providing PC's, laptops, and servers) "donating" a truckload of new, very expensive electronic score boards for all the stadiums was the driving factor there.

If that wasn't enough, I have 8 PC's on my home network, all running windows, also with no major issues. From my PERSONAL experience, it is just like IE vrs Firefox...I wouldn't be caught dead using IE...but mostly because of little things I prefer in FF over IE...and the fact that I like what FF represents. The same with Thunderbird, or Google.

You take an otherwise very mellow and lovable guy like PT and wind him up, wave the red windows flag at him, and stand back lol. I am gonna stop posting in here cause I really don't care about windows, M$, Mac etc as much as I care about PT's friendship--and I don't want to piss him off any more then he already is lol.

It's just a Rant G- it was never a pointed conversation ( please don't take it that way ). I just would like to see people get out and experience "computing" not just running windoze. There is a lot of options out there and it can be a real eye opener when/if people do..
