Review: Sapphire TOXIC X1900XTX

Introduction

Hardware companies would love for us to believe that, in their very heart, they are tweakers and gamers just like us. When we "identify" with them, we feel better about breaking out the credit cards. This usually means a PR team talking it up while handing out some gaming Tshirts at a trade show. Then there is Sapphire, who has stepped up to the plate with their factory water cooled TOXIC X1900XTX --and let it quietly do all the talking.

As a reward for working on pedestrian (read boring) family sedans and minivans, automotive engineers sometimes get to work on sexy high performance sports cars--the cars they dreamed of building and driving as kids. Sapphire Technologies must have had that inner child in mind when they turned their hardware engineers loose on the TOXIC X1900XTX to put some of the enthusiasm back in "enthusiast".

When Sapphire invited us to review the TOXIC for launch day, I had no shortage of staffers willing to have a go at this water cooled--check that--FACTORY water cooled uber video card--obviously, everyone is excited about it. Sucks for them as I pulled rank and opted to review it myself =)

A Fat Box

In addition to the usual driver CD and users' manual, the TOXIC comes bundled with the Software Select CD--Sapphire's answer to the debate on whether or not to include games. Rather than passing on games altogether, or including a game you might already have, they give you two unlock codes and 4 games to choose from--Brothers in Arms (Road to Hill 30), Prince of Persia (Warrior Within), Richard Burns Rally, or Tony Hawk's Underground 2. I really like this approach, and I hope it gains some STEAM in the industry.

Also included are copies of Cyberlink's PowerDVD 6, Power Director 4, and Sapphire's "TRIXX" overclocking utility. If you happened to notice that the card in the contents shot above is not a TOXIC but is, in fact, a Sapphire X1800GTO-- don't panic--my TOXIC review sample box was lacking the other items so I subbed in the image of the GTO that we are currently reviewing.
