Review: Logitech Z-5500 Digital Speakers

Introduction

Having recently read a few very positive reviews on the Logitech Z-5500 Digital speakers, I decided it was time to see for myself if they really were anywhere near the quality of the Klipsch Pro Media’s. Arrangements were made with Logitech for a review sample, and I contacted Klipsch and invited them to participate. I was more than a little surprised when my contact at Klipsch informed me Klipsch was not interested in participating in a review with Logitech “at this time”. Not to worry as I have not one, but three sets of Klipsch speakers, including their top end Pro Media’s.

First Impressions

After lugging the massive 60 pound box upstairs to my media room, I opened it and had a look. The packing job was very good, and in a manner that not only ensured safe transit, but had several nice touches for unpacking. The bass is huge and heavy, so there is a pair of plastic straps to use as handles for lifting it out of the box. Also in the box is a large printed quick start guide with excellent illustrations to help in setting up your system.

Included in the box are the bass, four satellites, the center speaker, the Digital Touch Control Center, remote, batteries, optical cable, five speaker wires, standard analog connectors, and a user’s manual.

The Control Center

Logitech has created a very attractive and useful means of controlling your sound system via the Digital Touch Control Center, or “Pod”. It sits on your desk quite securely with its wide base and connects to the sub via the included serial cable, as seen in the right image above. On the back of the Control Center is the typical triplet of 1/8th in stereo analog inputs, coaxial input, optical input, and a channel selector switch. On the right are analog 1/8th inch stereo mini connectors for headphones and a mic.
